Our FSC Grade wallpaper produced from sustainable managed forest. Our quirky yet stylish wallpaper makes a statement, it is a very popular choice for feature walls. It can be combined with our cordinating wallpapers to make a truly unique room.

And so our story begins, inspired by a piece of  authentic Japanese silk kimono fabric. The fabric had a strong  geometric diamond pattern which we have also utilised in our design. We have also incorporated repeat hexagons, which are one of the most favoured patterns still used to this day. Eight koi fish can be found within the hexagon diamond, although slightly less well-known, eight is also a lucky number in Japan. This is due to its shape – 八, it widens at the bottom signifying prosperity and growth.

Sushi can also surprisingly be found in our design, we love it and hope you do too.  The word “sushi” refers to rice that has been seasoned with vinegar, sugar and salt. If you look hard enough you can find ginger, this is eaten between different types of sushi, to cleanse your palate. Where's wasabi? again look carefully and you'll find it, it was originally eaten with sushi to kill bacteria and parasites in the fish, and now it is just eaten just out of habit.

The design has strong Japanese influences. The symmetry is, however very reminiscent of William Morris, just with a subversive modern twist. It would be at home both in a country house or loft apartment.

Our design is adorned with a huge school of koi fish swimming up the Yellow river

(in China). According to Chinese and Japanese myth, as they swam, they gained strength by pushing against the current. However, on the Yellow River, there is a waterfall, where most of the fish turned back as the journey was just too hard. It is said that those who remained continued to try to reach the top of the waterfall for one hundred years.  One day, one koi at last made it to the top of the waterfall. For its efforts this dedicated koi was turned it into a beautiful golden dragon by the gods.

Since then the waterfalls were known as the "Dragon's Gate.” after which this design is named. Legend has it that any koi that has the strength and perseverance to complete the journey up the waterfall will also become a heavenly golden dragon.

However if the koi is caught in its attempt it is also said it will await the cut of the knife fearlessly, with the bravery of a Samurai warrior facing the sword in battle. Remember, koi seldom end up as sushi!
